past present future.
Gregory Crewdson
Crewdson was born in 26 September 1962 in the Park slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. He attended John Dewey High School, graduating early.
Crewdson's photographs usually take place in small-town America, but his photography is dramatic and cinematic. He captures these photographs with elaborate setups and he uses a crew that is familiar with film production and lighting. Crewdson creates dramatic and cinematic images. He does this by having his images slightly darker which creates a sense of mystery. Crewdson has used a crew to help him create this work using the mechanics of a cinema which usually takes 2 to 3 days to set up. He’s got handpicked models to photograph. He also uses photoshop to collage the best of the same photograph together. His intentions are to create a photograph which feels both real and imagined. He uses just enough story to bring the viewer in and create a sense of mystery. The difference between 'cathedral of the pines' and his other work is that 'cathedral of the pines' is set in a forest full of pines. This makes the subject stand out from all of the trees. In Cathedral of the Pines, Crewdsonwanted to tell a story as he photographed his close friends and family to create intimate and personal a meaning behind each picture. |
My First Attempt
In this task we had to take a photograph applying the techniques and effects that Crewdson uses in his photographs. The aim of the task was to respond to Crewdson's style of photography and to try and produce a photograph of our own that was similar. This is similar to Gregory Crewdson because there is a person staring into nothing which makes you question what is happening.
My Favourite Picture
My intentions were to imitate the works of Crewdson. I did this by making the picture slightly darker by using a higher shutter speed and by having the model having a straight blank stare. I told the model to have a serious stare on his face to give a sense of eeriness. This is my favourite because the picture gives a sense of loneliness and emptiness. I manages my exposure well so the picture comes out slightly darker.
Artist and Me Comparison
The Subculture Archives
In this gallery the main focus of the art was based on the youth. This includes punks, emos, ravers, metalheads, goths, skaters and many more. The photos were also focused on the different styles of these groups, whether that would be the style of clothes that they choose to wear or the type of music they choose to listen to. Economic class, gender, intelligence, conformity, morality, and ethnicity can also be important in relation to youth subcultures.
The Journey
"To me, photography is an art of observation. Its about finding something interesting in an ordinary place...I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”
Elliot Erwitt
Elliot Erwitt
In this task I documented my journey to the art gallery without getting myself in the picture. I did this by taking pictures of the transportation I used and places associated with traveling.
I took some inspiration from Lee Friedlander.
In Lee Friedlander's work, ‘How I Got from There to Here in 100 Pictures or Less’ , he has a collection of pictures that he took outside of his car window to show his journey through the states of the USA.

Take a Photo Everyday
we looked at the work of Noah Kalina who took a photo of himself for 12 years. This showed how his face changed throughout time. This shows the change from teenage years into manhood.
I tried to replicate his work although it did not work as well because I only took photos for 15 days. During this time my face didn't change much therefore there is not a big change. I tried to keep the camera in a similar spot every time to minimise the movement although this did not work well as there is a lot of camera shake in the gif.
Young to Old.
The intention of this task is to make a young person look old by layering their face with one of an old person on Photoshop. This task relates to the theme of Past, Present and Future because it is a prediction of how the model will look when he's older, it is changing the model’s face as time would change it. When I took the photograph, I had to keep in mind to not have the picture overexposed. I tried to get good light whien I was photographing my model. I had to make sure that my model was looking straight at the camera so it would be easier to layer his face with one of an old person in Photoshop. WWW was the wrinkles in the face and around the eyes. I could improve on the eyes as I have rubbed them out a bit too much.
Past and Future
In this task I had to recreate a picture of when my brother was younger. Because my original picture was originally in black and white I also had to make sure that the settings on my camera made my picture look black and white. The intention of the task was to see how different my brother looks from when he was younger. This links into the theme of Past, present and future because its a photo of the past that has been recreated in the present. When I took a photograph I had to make sure it was in black and white, that the clothes worn were similar and that there was a white background. When I picked the old photo I had to make sure that the background wasn’t too complicated and that the image was easy to recreate. To make this photo I had to get my brother to have its body and facial expression as closely matched with the old photograph as I could. What went well was that the clothes were identical and the facial expression was similar.
Past in Present
The intention of the task was to try and hold up an old picture and match the background to try and fit. This task relates to the theme as it is showing how the setting has changed and shows the comparison between the old picture and the present background to show how time changes locations. What I had to consider during the task was that the main focuses of the old picture had to match up very closely with the background in order for this task to succeed. When taking the picture I had to make sure that I tried to stand where the original picture was taken. In this task I did not do so well as I struggled lining up the picture with the background.
All of my Attempts.
Man Evolves
In this task, we had to create the illusion that the people being photographed have superpowers. This meant that we had to time both the jumps and that photo at the same time in order for it to look realistic. There was good light on that day so I had a quicker shutter speed. The pictures could improve by having a better background with no people in it. Because there were two extremes of light, with the shadow and strong light, my photos were slightly overexposed in some parts.
This was my second attempt at editing on special effects.
Past, Present, Future
definitions-
Past
Present
Past
- Gone by in time and no longer existing.
- The time before the moment of speaking or writing.
Present
- existing or occurring now.
- the period of time now occurring.
I used Pinterest to give me a general idea of the theme Past, Present and Future.
The general idea I got from using pintrest is to use something in the past and make a direct comparison to how it looks now.

Strand1: double exposure
Andre de Freitas
Andre De Freitas creates double exposure pictures to blend in two pictures into one. He does this by taking two pictures and blending them together using Photoshop. He wanted us to consider how the two pictures link in together.
Andre De Freitas has used double exposure in creating this work. This means that he took two pictures and has combined them. This links into the theme ‘Past, Present and future’ because he is altering the original image, which he has taken in the past. This is because when he takes a picture he has to also find the right moment to take the second picture to then blend them together.
'Hello, my name is Andre De Freitas and I'm an illustrator and occasional photographer born and raised in Lima, Peru. I studied in Full Sail University and got a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Animation. But oddly enough, the concept of stillness captured my imagination, and I focused more on illustration. Instead of just drawing, I tried to imagine myself taking photos of my subjects. That way the illusion of stillness would be a little more believable, almost like a photograph. After that, my insertion into the world of photography was almost based on instinct'.-Andre De Freitas Relate this quote to the images.

Pictures that I went to photograph to make my double exposure.
I decided that the pictures I took earlier were not appropriate for a double exposure so I took more and created this.

Strand2: Jhon Clang
John Clang, born in 1973 in Singapore, is a visual artist working in photography and film.
These pictures involve recording a location, to show the passing of time. Clang creates an objective image where the focus is the people walking past and their movement whilst everything around them stays in the same place. He does this by going into a busy area where many people walk past and takes pictures. He wanted us to consider the sense of ‘intimate intricacy of how time moves, and how people, albeit in a different time, are actually closer to one another and traveling in the same shared space’. These images also explore his fascination that there are probably many time dimensions in this universe. Clang has used a tripod in creating this work. This creates a steady image with the building and roads staying in the same place but the people moving to show the passing of time.

My two sets of pictures.
Layered image.
I have edited the pictures I chose and photoshopped the people walking past all in one picture. This does not look like the work from Jhon Clang. This is because I have photoshopped the people in the picture and I did not rip up the pictures therefore it does not look like the picture was altered in any way. I decided to make a ripped one to mimic his work more. I do not have as many people in my collage as Jhon Clang.
Strand 3: Young to old
This strand links into the theme of ‘past, present and future’ because it shows the passing of time. It does this by showing half of the face of a young person and the other half as an older person. This shows the past and the present through the ageing of the human body.
Chosen strand: Double Exposure
I chose this strand as I thought it was the most appropriate to the theme and because it was the one I most enjoyed creating. I will develop this strand so it is more than just a technique. I will do this by having two pictures combined that link in together or highly contrasts. This is so the picture has a story behind it, making it more interesting.
I took a landscape picture of my model. I will use his face as the main focus of the photograph.
I photo shopped fire in his face. The model had a deep serious stare on his face so I thought that I decided that editing fire on his face was appropriate as the photo would still have a serious overall feel to it.
I wanted to create a gif of the fire moving behind his face so I decided to make a gif of the fire. I later realised that this was not needed in order to create a gif double exposure. This was my first attempt to create a double-exposure with a gif so I was not familiar with the procedure.
Here I have the steps of how to make a gif.
Here I have the steps of how to make a gif.
I decided to attempt to make a double exposure with a gif. I decided to do this as I thought it would suit the theme as I am creating something new with pictures that I have taken in the past.
In this piece, the background is moving slightly. This occurred because when i dragged the pictures in photoshop I had to enlarge the pictures again which caused a slight movement between the pictures. Next time I will be more precise when enlarging the pictures. the fire in the background also does not always fill the face of the model. This is because the fire picture has also been moved about in different frames.
I took inspiration from Jean Yves Lemoigne's 'thai boxing' piece and tried to imitate his work. I took pictures in a basement of a person boxing. I wanted to create a good gif of the boxer to then edit and place another gif such as the fire inside his silhouette. However, I quickly realised that the basement did not have much lighting an therefore the pictures could not have a fast enough shutter to get a brick picture but also not blurry. I decided to not edit these pictures as they would not be suitable as my find piece.
'Visually, we were inspired by photographic double exposures. Fragmented portraits, created by using human figures as windows into partial landscapes, served as a great way to show characters that are marginalised or internally divided. It made sense for the titles to feature portraits of the lead characters built out the place they lived. This became a graphic way of doing what the show does in the drama: reveal character through location'
I liked the idea of representing people through double exposure and to reveal someone through location.

First attempt at a final piece
Relevance to the theme:
In this task I decided to create a double exposure piece using two gifs.
This task links to the theme, Past, Present and Future as it presents the past through the old pictures that have already been taken. It also presents present through the creation of a new piece by mixing two previously existing photographs. This piece is mixing the fire piece and the piece of the boy turning his head. These are both pieces that were taken in the past but once they have been combined, it has created something new, hence the link to the theme, Past, Present and Future.
My intention was to respond to themes of past and present. These two strands can be similar or even identical. This is because once a new piece has been created; it is then classified as past. There also is no time limit for past therefore anything that happens can be considered as ‘past’.
The subject I chose to photograph was a serious look on a young boy. I had to match this intensity with something just as serious so I decided to go with fire. I also decided to use fire as fire is temporary and will eventually die off just like life.
My composition helped to support my response to the theme because I decided to use two gifs in a double exposure. The gifs symbolise the past as I have already taken the photographs, however, the double exposure symbolises the present as I was creating my final piece and mixing the past, which creates the ‘present’.
I managed the shutter speed very well for the pictures of the model as they had to be on a medium shutter speed as it was't too dark nor too bright. I also has a wide aperture to make the background blurry to make the model stand out more. I used an aperture of f5.6 and a shutter speed of 1/150.
Next time I will create a final piece with a meaning behind it. In my next work I want to photograph a contivertial topic to make my work more appealing.

I decided to have a meaning behind my final piece. I decided to photograph a young boy and a dog barking. Both of these subjects are heavily stereotyped on a daily basis even if they don’t have any wrong intentions. By having the dog bark and potentially looking aggressive it makes the subject look more intimidating. This piece shows the instant stereotypes a person assumes when seeing a young man with a dog on a metal chain. I made this piece to challenge the instant assumptions people make on people and dogs.
